Works employees do for our village and for our residents. There is also plenty of behind-the-scenes work that helps make the village of Hammond the livable, progressive village it is.

Residents of the village of Hammond can count on Public Works employees to do their jobs well. Simply put, they make our village work by tending to our infrastructure needs and improving our surroundings. Public Works employees focus on the safety, cleanliness and smooth function of our streets, sewers, water production, parks, buildings and much more.

Presently, the Public Works Department has four full-time employees. Normal hours of operation are from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday.

Current 2008 Public Works Projects 

Streets

In 2007 improvements to Park St were completed as well as a small portion of Clark St. In 2008 completion of improvements to Clarks St from Norton St. to Broadway St, in addition Wolf St. east of Clark and Adams St South of Wolf to Broadway St. will also be improved at the same time. The project should be completed in November.

County Rd. “T” (Davis St.) south of the railroad crossing has been milled and overlaid; improvements to the intersection of “J” and “T” were made to include a turning lane onto county “J” from south traffic and a bypass lane for traffic coming from the south also.

Parks

A multi use area that will include basketball, tennis and an ice skate rink is scheduled to be completed and ready for use in early October. The area has been constructed where the volleyball courts were, this will allow for dual use of the lighting and warming house in the winter for the ice rink and the sliding hill.

Two picnics pavilions are scheduled to be built in the village park located on Klein Dr. they will each be equipped with two picnic tables and a charcoal grill. One will be located between the front and back ball fields, and the other will be located at the top of the sliding hill, plans to have paths connecting these to a single path through the park will be addressed in the near future.

  

Brush and Compost Pickup 

Brush and compost curbside pickup is a service provided every Monday from April through October by the Public Works Department.

Brush must be tied in bundles no larger than 12” in diameter and 4-6 feet in length, compost should be bagged in sturdy bags and not weigh more 45 pounds. Brush and compost should be placed at the curb before 8:00 am Monday to insure pickup.  Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in your brush or compost not be picked up.

Exception for pickup of unbundled brush when storms cause damage are made, brush must be stacked neatly at the curb, please call the Public Works Department at 796-5572 to arrange pickup of unbundled brush if this occurs.
  

Pool Fills

Pool fills are provided by the Public Works Department, the fees for filling a pool are as follows:

Hydrant use charge:                      $25.00
Cost of water per 1,000 Gallons $2.47

A responsible person must be available to monitor the pool as it fills and contact the public works department when finished.
